Desk-related neck, upper-back and lower-back pain.

Long periods at a desk can be associated with neck, shoulder, upper-back and lower-back symptoms. Dr Kevin Park assesses how your symptoms behave, how you move and which work demands matter before discussing treatment, exercise and practical workstation strategies.

Understanding your symptoms

Desk-related pain is usually more complex than one ‘bad’ posture.

Symptoms may be influenced by time spent in one position, limited movement variety, workload, repeated reaching, screen or laptop use, sleep, stress, physical capacity and an existing neck or back condition. There is no single posture that suits everyone. Assessment helps identify the factors that are most relevant to you and screens for symptoms that need medical investigation.

Desk-worker guides

Start with the symptom that best matches your workday.

These practical guides explain common symptom patterns, sensible workday changes and when an assessment may be appropriate.

Reasons people book

Symptoms that can build during desk, laptop or computer work.

These are common reasons office workers book an assessment. They are not diagnoses, and symptoms should be considered in the context of your health history and examination.

01

Neck pain and ‘text neck’

Aching, stiffness or reduced movement after sustained screen, phone or laptop use.

02

Upper-back and shoulder-blade discomfort

Tension, fatigue or pain between the shoulder blades during concentrated desk work.

03

Lower-back and hip discomfort

Symptoms that increase with prolonged sitting, commuting or moving from sitting to standing.

04

Shoulder and arm symptoms

Discomfort associated with keyboard, mouse, reaching or repeated upper-limb tasks.

05

Headaches associated with neck symptoms

Headaches accompanied by neck stiffness or symptoms that appear during prolonged computer work.

06

Recurring end-of-day stiffness

Symptoms that repeatedly build through the workday and affect exercise, sleep or activity afterwards.

Your initial appointment

Assessment, explanation and treatment in one visit.

Treatment is included in every initial consultation after the assessment, when clinically appropriate and with your consent.

01

History

We discuss when symptoms began, working hours, sitting and standing patterns, equipment, breaks, commuting, exercise, sleep and the activities you want to return to comfortably.

02

Assessment

The examination may include neck, upper-back, lower-back and shoulder movement, relevant neurological tests, strength or endurance checks and tasks that reproduce your work-related symptoms.

03

Explanation

Dr Kevin explains the findings, which factors appear most relevant and whether treatment, rehabilitation, workplace changes, medical review or imaging should be considered.

04

Treatment

Every initial consultation includes treatment after the assessment. With your consent, this may include mobilisation, manipulation, soft-tissue therapy or guided exercise selected for your presentation.

Individualised care

Care can combine hands-on treatment, exercise and realistic workday changes.

Depending on the examination, management may include spinal or joint mobilisation, manipulation when appropriate, soft-tissue therapy, mobility or strengthening exercises, pacing and advice about varying positions. Workstation suggestions focus on practical adjustments rather than trying to hold one rigid ‘perfect’ posture all day.

Desk-related symptoms have different causes and responses to care. Recommendations are individualised, no particular outcome can be guaranteed, and referral is recommended when the presentation falls outside chiropractic care.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from desk and office workers.

Can prolonged sitting contribute to neck or back pain?+

Long periods with limited movement can be associated with neck, upper-back and lower-back symptoms. Sitting is not automatically harmful, but symptom behaviour, movement variety, workload and individual health factors should be considered together.

Is poor posture the cause of my pain?+

Not necessarily. Pain rarely comes from one posture alone. The assessment considers how long you stay in one position, how symptoms respond to movement, work demands, physical capacity and other possible contributors.

Do I need a standing desk?+

A standing desk is not essential for everyone. If used, it is usually most helpful as another position to alternate with rather than a replacement for all sitting. Your current setup and symptoms can be discussed during the appointment.

Can you assess headaches that occur during computer work?+

Yes. Dr Kevin can assess headaches when neck or surrounding musculoskeletal factors may be involved. Because headaches have many possible causes, the consultation also screens for features requiring medical review.

What if I have tingling or numbness in my arm or hand?+

Tingling or numbness may have several causes involving the neck, nerves or upper limb. A neurological assessment may be included, and medical investigation or referral is recommended when indicated.

Will you inspect my workstation?+

The clinic does not provide an on-site occupational workstation assessment through this appointment. You can bring photographs or measurements of your setup, and Dr Kevin can discuss practical general adjustments relevant to the clinical findings.

What treatment may be used?+

Depending on the examination and your preferences, care may include spinal manipulation or mobilisation, soft-tissue therapy, mobility work, strengthening and advice about breaks, activity and position changes.

Is treatment included at the initial appointment?+

Yes. Every initial consultation includes treatment following the history and physical assessment, provided with your consent and adapted to the clinical findings.

How many appointments will I need?+

This cannot be determined accurately before assessment. Recommendations depend on the presentation, goals and response to care. Progress should be reviewed, and unnecessary ongoing treatment is not recommended.

How much is the initial appointment?+

The initial chiropractic consultation and treatment is 30 minutes and costs $101.50. Eligible private health rebates may be processed through HICAPS.
