Understanding your symptoms

Shoulder pain can come from the joint, surrounding tissues or the neck.

Pain, stiffness, weakness or reduced movement may relate to the shoulder joint, muscles, tendons or ligaments. Symptoms can also be referred from the neck or another area. An assessment helps identify the likely contributors, check whether chiropractic care is appropriate and determine whether medical review or imaging may be needed.

Reasons people book

Shoulder symptoms that affect daily movement, work or exercise.

These are common reasons people book an assessment. They are not diagnoses, and the most suitable next step depends on the history and examination.

01

Pain when lifting or reaching

Discomfort with overhead movement, dressing, reaching behind the back or carrying objects.

02

Restricted shoulder movement

Stiffness or loss of range that makes everyday tasks, work or training more difficult.

03

Gym and sporting pain

Symptoms with pressing, pulling, throwing, swimming or repetitive upper-limb activity.

04

Desk and workplace strain

Shoulder and upper-back discomfort associated with prolonged postures or repeated work tasks.

05

Tendon-related concerns

Pain or weakness that may involve the rotator cuff or other shoulder tendons and needs appropriate assessment.

06

Neck and shoulder symptoms

Pain around the shoulder blade or upper arm that may be influenced by the neck or nervous system.

Your initial appointment

Assessment, explanation and treatment in one visit.

Treatment is included in every initial consultation after the assessment, when clinically appropriate and with your consent.

01

History

We discuss when the symptoms began, aggravating movements, sleep, work, exercise, previous injuries and your goals.

02

Assessment

The examination may include shoulder and neck movement, strength, relevant orthopaedic or neurological tests and functional tasks.

03

Explanation

Dr Kevin explains the findings, likely contributors, available options and whether referral or imaging should be considered.

04

Treatment

Your initial consultation includes treatment after the assessment. This may include mobilisation, manipulation, soft tissue therapy or guided exercise, selected with your consent.

Individualised care

Care may combine hands-on treatment and progressive rehabilitation.

Depending on the assessment, management may involve shoulder or spinal mobilisation, manipulation when appropriate, soft tissue therapy, load guidance and a personalised exercise program. Radial shockwave therapy may be considered for some tendon-related presentations when clinically appropriate.

No single treatment is suitable for every shoulder problem. Recommendations are based on your examination, preferences, response to care and any need for referral.
